Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

Habachtal emerald trail

Wild mountain stream and minerals

This trail is the perfect complement to the national park exhibition of "Emeralds & Crystals" in the Bramberg museum and has eleven stations along the way covering topics such as exploring local minerals and the legend of Fazenwand and the search for green fire.

The geology of the Hohe Tauern region and Habachtal (Habach valley) is vividly illustrated with the rocks important to Habachtal.

  • Trail description:

The emerald trail branches off from the wide road just after the national park information point at the Habachtal car park and runs alongside the splashing waters of the Habach. At the "Grüner Boden", you will find some interesting tips about the most important minerals found in Habachtal, as well as about the legendary figure known as the "Venedigermandl". After crossing the bridge over the Habach river, the emerald trail meanders through an area with an extraordinary number of natural springs. A little later a bridge takes you onto a large rock in the middle of the Habach, where you can experience first-hand the wildness of this mountain river. Somewhat after that, a figure drawn from legend tells the tale of the Fazenwand. A children's playground and climbing opportunities can be found close to the Gasthof Enzianhütte (Enzian inn). The highlight of the emerald trail is a landslide area close to Almgasthof Alpenrose (Alpenrose inn) where you can hunt for your own piece of green fire.
