Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

A glanze
in the Hohe Tauern Window

  • Looking through the Hohe Tauern Window allows you to look at many millions of years of earth history. This special tour into the “core of the national park” starts at the Knappenstube in Neukirchen. You can reach this point by following the educational geo trail “Geolehrweg” by foot for approx. 1 ½ hours. All participants will be given jackets and helmets to make sure they are all well equipped for the guided tour through the tourist mine. During this guided tour through the mine, which has been adapted in order to allow visitors, you will get fascinating insights into Alpine geology and the history of the national park. You will also be able to experience and learn from real experts about the Hohe Tauern Window, a true highlight of the national park. At the end of this circular tour through the gallery, we will follow the trail back to the Bergwerkshütte mining hut.

The Hohe Tauern emerged thanks to the interplay of endogenous and exogenous geological forces. Endogenous forces occur in the interior of the earth, and they have led to the folding and piling of mighty rock units, to rock transformations and to the formation of mountains. Exogenous processes take place at the surface of the earth and have influenced the development of shapes and forms of high mountain landscapes for thousands of years, and they still do today.
