Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

A trip to
the Arctic

  • The meeting point for this tour is at the respectable height of 2,311 metres above sea level and can be reached with the Weißsee Gletscherbahn cable car. Right from the start, we will be able to enjoy a stunning panoramic view. The ranger will then take us slightly downhill to the Weißsee reservoir pond, and then lead us back up a trail to Lake Eissee where we will be able to see the foothills of the Sonnblick glacier. Along the way, our national park ranger will share interesting facts and details about the flora and fauna of the Hohe Tauern National Park and explain the different altitudinal belts we will cross. With a bit of luck, we might even spot ibex und marmots. The trail will then take us back to the Rudolfshütte hut. From there, we take a cable car back to the parking lot.

This hike is located in the area between Mt. Großglockner and Mt. Granatspitze, both impressive mountains, each with a height of more than 3,000 metres above sea level. The glaciers are the last pieces of evidence for the existence of the Ice Age, which has had a lasting influence on the shape and form of the Hohe Tauern landscape. Sadly, the glaciers are shrinking and disappearing due to global warming.
