Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

A natural jewel

  • The tour starts at the valley station of the Weißseegletscher Bahnen mountain railways and will take you through the Wiegenwald, a virgin and most extraordinary forest, to the “black puddle”, also known to locals as “Schwarze Lacke”. On the way, the ranger will fill us in on interesting details about the animals, plants and trees of the area, such as Swiss pines and larches. With the aid of the rangers, we will not only see, but also smell, taste and hear the national park. If we are lucky, we might see the strong blue colour of blueberry plants along the way and even taste their fruits. Beautiful ponds in the bog invite us to take a rest and watch the scenery. On our ascent to the middle station of the Weißsee mountain railways through the natural forest, we will not even notice that we will be gaining 230 metres in height. At the end of the tour, a cable car will take us back to the point of departure.

The Wiegenwald forest is a very precious gem of the Hohe Tauern National Park, because it has been protected for more than 300 years. The tree population is almost virgin and mainly comprised of spruces, larches and Swiss pines in the lower areas. The higher areas, however, are dominated by the unique and fascinating shapes and forms of the Swiss pine.
