Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

Kings of
the heights

  • This tour guided by a national park ranger starts at the entry of the Krumltal valley and leads us along the Krumlbach stream further into the valley. While we hike, the ranger will share many interesting details about vultures and eagles, and we will also make short stops from time to time to position our binoculars and spotting scopes to scan the summit ridges. We have high hopes to spot some wild animals, since the Rauris valley is the valley with the highest density of golden eagle populations of the entire national park. The tour continues along the “red face” – where we will be able to see some abandoned vulture nests – to the Bräualm huts. This is where we will position our spotting devices once again in order to detect one or more “kings of the heights”. Birds are not the only wild animals we may see, however, since marmots and chamois live in the area as well.

    Highlights:

With some luck we might even see bearded vultures during this tour. Bearded vultures have a wing span of up to 2.9 metres and are therefore one of the largest bird species in the world capable of flying. In 1986, we began to reintroduce these majestic birds into the Hohe Tauern National Park, after they had been eradicated by humans. Since their reintroduction, the bearded vultures have reproduced five times already in the Krumltal valley, the very location of this beautiful guided tour.
