Brief tour description:
This guided ranger tour starts at the Oberhaus parking lot and takes you through the unique cultural landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park. We will pass traditional quaint alps and ancient stone walls and hike through the largest Swiss pine forest of the Eastern Alps to the Jagdhausalmen huts. Once we’ve recharged our batteries with some snacks and drinks, we will make our way back and take a short detour to see the famous Peacock’s Eye.
Highlights:
Located at the rear end of the Defereggental at 2,009 m above sea level, we will find the oldest alp of Austria. The 15 stone houses and the chapel on the alp have been first mentioned in the 12th century as a place of permanent residence, and they are still a fascinating sight and popular place for taking photographs in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Today the huts are used and farmed during the summer months, and they can be reached from Tyrol and South Tyrol - via the Klammljoch.
Our tip:
