Experience nature in the Oberhauser pine forest in  the Defereggen valley

  • The new 22-metre-high wildlife observation tower offers an impressive view of the largest contiguous pine forest in the Eastern Alps.

Through the spotlight you can enjoy a unique view of the East Tyrolean wildlife and birds and with a bit of luck you can even see one of our great prey (bearded vultures, golden eagles etc. ).

On the short walk from the parking lot Oberhaus to the Alpengasthaus Oberhaus, display boards provide interesting information about the ecosystem of the pine forest. Arrived at the observation tower, the information can be experienced up close over 3 floors.

The Oberhauser Zirbenwald in the lower Defereggental is with its more than 170 ha the largest contiguous pine stand in the Eastern Alps, of which more than 100 ha have been designated as natural forests and are subject to strict protection.

The enclosed pine forest, together with the cultivated valley floors and the alpine pastures, forms a charming backdrop, which is presented in more detail on the circular route.

A special feature of the Oberhauser Zirbenwald are the sometimes extreme block locations of the up to 900-year-old pine trees. They often overgrow large boulders and enclose them with their roots.

As a special highlight, the newly built observation tower with a view of the mountain forest awaits us.Despite the altitude of the Oberhausen pine forest, birdwatchers will also get their money’s worth: More than 25 species of birds can be seen in the pine forest.
