The Oberhaus stone pine forest with over 170 ha towards to the rear of Defereggental (Defereggen valley) represents the largest contiguous stone pine population in the Eastern Alps, with more than 100 ha designated as natural forest and subject to strict conservation regulations. Together with the cultivated valley floors and the pastures, the closed stone pine forest forms a scenic backdrop which you can inspect more closely while walking the circular route. One special feature of the Oberhaus stone pine forest are the partially extreme boulder locations of the stone pines aged up to 600 years old; they frequently grow on large boulders and surround them with their roots.
Bird watchers also get value for money despite the high altitude of the Oberhaus stone pine forest: more than 30 bird species can be seen in the stone pine forest.
