Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

Eternal ice – cold giants in hot times

This high alpine circular educational glacier trail will lead you to the largest connected glacier area of the Eastern Alps – the Schlatenkees glacier amidst the Hohe Tauern National Park.

    • Brief tour description:

This guided hike starts at the Matreier Tauernhaus. A taxi then takes us to the beautiful Gschlösstal (Gschlöss valley). Once we reach the Alpine inn Alpengasthof Venedigerhaus, we will hike to the head of the valley with our ranger and continue along the glacier back to the Venedigerhaus. Depending on your motivation and stamina, you can either get back to the Matreier Tauernhaus by foot or by taxi. Tipp: We recommend a visit to the Almsennerei Tauer right by the entry to the Gschlösstal to learn all about Alpine dairy production.

Once upon a time, gigantic glacial forces formed this magnificent landscape in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The glacier is a fascinating phenomenon bearing many secrets. Other highlights of this tour in addition to the glacial polish are Salzbodensee and the so-called Eye of God covered in cotton grass. Moreover, this demanding tour rewards you with breath-taking views of the glaciated peaks of the Venediger group in all their glory.
